Wild Mushrooms…

While on a trail to Hatchery Falls in scenic Muskoka, I came across the most beautiful mushrooms that took me back to my childhood, fairy tales, elves and toadstools. I am convinced that whoever wrote these tales visited such places. I love the smell of damp earth, the springy feel as you walk on trails formed by years of fallen bark and paths that feel almost cork-like, the mossy expanses on the barks of trees, the sounds of the leaves rustling in the quietness of the woods and the coolness of a break-out-sweat that follows after a long walk. The best environment for growth of these mushrooms are the damp and moist undergrowth. However, don’t be fooled by their beautiful colours, apparently some of them are poisonous.

1 Corinthians 3:16 - Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?

Summer rain…

This summer we had an abundance of rain showers, some days it rained hard and long and while it kept us indoors , the gardens and plants around us seemed to flourish. It is amazing what rain can do to the earth, less rain and we have drought, plenty of rain and we have floods, but just the right amount of rain creates and brings forth an abundance!! Rain revives dormant plants, brings lushness to lawns and aids in releasing the soil micronutrients essential to plant growth. Similar to what the word of God does to our bodies and souls.

Deuteronomy 32:2 - “Let my teaching fall like rain, and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.”

Peace and harmony…

When you need a break from the rush and busyness of life, a quick escape or a getaway to a place of quiet and calm will help your body and mind to breathe and relax. It will remove you from the everyday stress, the chaotic lifestyle that most of us lead, the thoughts and anxieties that crowd our minds and fill our heads, the tensions in our bodies and the regular worries that everyday life brings. The rest and relaxation will bring healing to your mind and body and rejuvenate you. The getaway does not have to be an expensive or exotic getaway, it can be an escape to your room or your backyard, a hike in the woods, a day spent gardening, a long walk by the lake or a day spent in bed reading your favourite book. What’s your getaway this weekend?

Jeremiah 30:17 -
For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.

Food for thought…

A month ago we hiked past green fields of what seemed like tall grasses. Today we hiked past the same fields and to our surprise and delight we saw a vast expanse of brownish-golden-beige stalks of wheat gently blowing in the wind. Thank you Lord for the bread we eat.

Genesis 1:29 - And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Container gardening…

For those who do not have a garden, a lawn, or an area to grow flowers and vegetables, there are lots of ways to indulge in your love for plants. Container gardening is the way to go – find your favourite pot or container and fill them with seed or your favourite flowers or vegetables and watch them grow and spill over and provide you with joy. You can get the same pleasure out of container gardening. Be adventurous with your containers. I have seen old recycled tyres, kettles, a washbasin, a hat, a shoe be fashioned into containers that hold a variety of plants. Try different arrangements, practice with plant and pot colours, move your containers around to form designs, in short – experiment.

Amos 9:14 - And I will bring my people Israel back from exile. They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
